How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile often decides who shows up in the map pack before your website ever gets a click. Here is what actually moves it.

For most local service businesses, the map pack at the top of a Google search matters more than any organic ranking below it. What lands there is driven almost entirely by a free profile most businesses have never fully filled out.

Start with the fields Google actually checks

Your primary category, business name, service area and hours carry more ranking weight than almost anything else on the profile. Stuffing keywords into your business name breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended, so keep the name exactly as it appears on your signage and let the category field do the work.

Photos and posts Google rewards

  • Upload real job photos regularly, not stock images: profiles with fresh photos get more clicks and more direction requests
  • Use the Posts feature for updates, offers and completed jobs, since active profiles rank above dormant ones with identical reviews
  • Fill out the services or products list with a real sentence for each one instead of leaving it blank

Reviews are still the biggest lever

Review count, recency and your response rate all factor into local ranking, not just the star average. A steady stream of new reviews outperforms a large batch collected once and never repeated. Responding to every review, good or bad, signals an active business Google is more willing to surface. See how our local SEO service works

What most businesses get wrong

The most common mistake is treating the profile as a one-time setup instead of something that needs the same ongoing attention as a website. Google publishes its own guidance on what a complete, policy-compliant profile looks like, and most of the easy wins are sitting inside it, unread. Read Google's Business Profile guidance
