What Is Schema Markup, and Why It Matters
Schema markup is invisible code that tells search engines exactly what your business is, instead of leaving them to guess from your homepage copy.
By Hasan Çolak, Founder
Most small business owners have never heard of schema markup, and their competitors have not touched it either, which makes it one of the easiest technical wins left in local SEO.
What it actually is
Schema markup is a small block of structured code added to a page that states facts plainly: this is a business named X, located at Y, open these hours, offering these services. Visitors never see it. Search engines and AI models read it directly instead of trying to infer the same facts from paragraphs of marketing copy.
What it can unlock in search results
- Star ratings and review counts shown directly under a search result, before anyone clicks
- Opening hours and address appearing right in the result, cutting the number of taps to find them
- A more complete, more confident answer when someone asks an AI model to recommend a local business
The types that matter most for a local business
- LocalBusiness: name, address, phone number and hours, the core facts every local search depends on
- Organization: logo and official name, used for the knowledge panel and brand search results
- BreadcrumbList: the page hierarchy, which helps both rankings and how a result is displayed
None of this replaces real content or real reviews. It just makes sure the facts you already have are handed to search engines in a format they trust completely, instead of a format they have to interpret. See how our local SEO service works
Checking whether your site has it
Most template builders either skip structured data entirely or add an incomplete version. Google's own documentation lays out exactly which fields each schema type expects, and it is worth checking your own site against it before assuming this box is already ticked.
